1 Samuel 8:1–18: As Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as judges, but they were corrupt and accepted bribes. The elders of Israel asked Samuel to appoint a king to rule them like the other nations. Samuel was displeased, but God told him to listen to the people, explaining that they were rejecting God as their true King. God instructed Samuel to warn them about the consequences of having a human king: he would take their sons for military service, their daughters for labor, the best of their fields and livestock, and impose heavy taxes. The people would eventually cry out because of the burdens their king placed on them, but God would not answer them in that day. Key lesson: Rejecting God’s leadership in favor of worldly solutions often brings unintended consequences. God desires His people to trust His rule above human systems.
