25 Fake Dairy Products Australians Are Probably Buying Every Week
That milk, cheese or yoghurt sitting in your fridge might not be quite what you think it is.
Not because Australia’s dairy aisle is full of dangerous “fake food” — but because the words and claims on the front of the pack can tell a very different story from the ingredients on the back.
In this investigation, we break down 25 everyday dairy products Australians buy every week — from long-life and “fresh” milk to butter blends, processed cheese, yoghurt, custard and ice cream.
We investigate:
🥛 why one major dairy processor faced ACCC penalties over allegedly misleading “fresh” milk claims
🧀 what anti-caking agents are doing in pre-shredded cheese
🧈 what can actually be inside butter blends and margarine
🥣 Greek yoghurt vs “Greek style” yoghurt
💪 how high-protein dairy products achieve their protein numbers
🍦 why expensive ice cream doesn't necessarily win blind taste tests
🇦🇺 and the unusual country-of-origin situation for Australian ice cream
The important point? Processed doesn't automatically mean dangerous, and “fake” doesn't necessarily mean unsafe.
Many products covered here are legitimate and accurately labelled. The bigger issue is how easily the front of the packaging can create an impression that doesn't tell you the whole story.
By the end, you'll know five quick checks you can make in the dairy aisle — from reading the first three ingredients to checking protein numbers, origin information and marketing words such as “style,” “natural” and “premium.”
