"The water does not ask who is standing above it." 🕯️ Welcome to "Zir — What Runs Beneath". Under the Iranian desert there are hand-dug tunnels older than most nations, carrying water through solid rock for centuries with nobody watching. This record is set entirely down there. You never once see what is happening above you — you only hear it arrive through thirty metres of stone. That decided everything about how it was built. The first eight tracks sit under a palace, and what reaches you is weight being dragged, a chain, a shaft someone bricked shut generations ago. The ninth is many footsteps crossing at once, all going the same way, the first time anything up there moves outward instead of in circles. After that the ground above changes hands and you are under a forge: a hammer starting, one patch of ceiling going warm, and then the hammering stopping. The last track has nothing overhead at all — the tunnel ends at solid mountain and the rock is no longer above her but around her. There is one more thing under this record. Every one of these fifteen recordings was made and then set aside — these are the versions that were not chosen, kept and never released. It seemed right that an album about what runs underneath should be made out of them.
