Welcome to Episode 15 of our All-India Family Road Expedition from Kerala to Ladakh! This is Part 2 of our Day 14 journey, diving deep into the breathtaking wonders of Nubra Valley. We begin this part of our journey at the majestic Diskit Monastery, the oldest and largest monastery in Nubra Valley. Standing beneath the iconic, 106-foot giant Maitreya Buddha statue surrounded by stark, towering cold-desert mountains is a spiritual and visual experience like no other. From the monastery, we drop down into the golden landscapes of the Hunder Sand Dunes. Before setting off for adventure, we set up our portable kitchen right in the desert sands and cooked a quick, delicious lunch of Egg Maggi and fresh Vegetable Salad! Next came one of the ultimate highlights of our Ladakh trip—riding the double-humped Bactrian Camels across the high-altitude sand dunes! With 3 camels booked for our family, gliding over the cold desert dunes was an unforgettable experience that every traveler must try. Afterward, the kids had a blast playing air-gun shooting games and enjoying local desert carnival activities. As the sun began to set, we took our trusty car for an incredible drive through the sand dunes, blending on-road and light off-road stretches with a backdrop of glowing mountains. We wrapped up the evening by finding a cozy local homestay right near the sand dunes. The warm local family, along with their two sweet young daughters, welcomed us with open arms, and the kids had the absolute best time playing together! They kindly let us use their kitchen area where we cooked up a comforting dinner of porridge and Egg Bhurji, paired with home-packed Kerala pickle and Chammanthi Podi.
