For more on the history of WDNL (D-102), Danville, IL, visit the Central Illinois On-Line Broadcast Museum at https://www.dougquick.com. This audio of WDNL is from May 22, 1980. I, Doug Quick, filled in for Bill “Boober” LaCombe, the regular night DJ. It added about five hours to my airshift, as I normally was on the air from 3 to 7 pm. All it did was put me in the studio for another 40 minutes or so to record his shift. Bill does the tag on the Miller Beer commercials. You’ll notice how many beverage commercials there are. WDNL would air a beverage commercial in virtually every commercial spot cluster, day and night. The number of beer and soft drink commercials that aired on the stations was huge and brought in close to 20 percent of the stations' income from the late 1970s through the early 1990s, almost all running between May and late September, with another small surge in December. It’s sad to report that because of changes in Danville's demographics, none of the advertised local businesses exist today. They’ve all been replaced with other advertisers in the market. WDNL dayparted music to make room for current album cuts after 6pm. Even gold sections and chart rising-and-falling cuts were dayparted after 3 pm to allow for more “harder” rock selections. The dayparted songs were still mixed in with the regular format-defining “Gold” cuts played 24/7. Even the currents were dayparted at least by a couple of cuts. Enjoy this journey back to nearly 50 years ago with WDNL, D-102 Danville, IL.
