Papaya cultivation is becoming an interesting agricultural activity in a village near Kasur, Punjab, Pakistan. During my visit, I was impressed to see rows of papaya trees loaded with fresh green fruits. Farmers are growing papaya as an alternative cash crop because of its market demand and commercial potential. The warm climate of the Kasur region provides suitable conditions for papaya cultivation, provided that farmers have proper irrigation, well-drained soil, and protection from frost and strong winds. Papaya trees grow relatively quickly and can start producing fruits within the first year under favourable conditions. Farmers carefully manage watering, fertilisation, weed control, and pest protection to maintain healthy plants and good-quality fruits. The harvested papayas can be sold in local fruit markets and nearby cities, creating additional income opportunities for farming families. This village demonstrates how innovative agricultural practices can diversify rural economies and introduce new opportunities for farmers in Pakistan.
