Lunersee Lake in Austria Lüner Lake (German Lünersee) is a large lake near the town of Bludenz in Vorarlberg, Austria. Lünersee is a stunning alpine reservoir located in the Vorarlberg region of Austria, nestled in the Rätikon mountains at an altitude of 1,970 meters (6500 feet). Once one of the largest natural mountain lakes in the Eastern Alps, it was transformed into a hydroelectric reservoir in 1959 by raising its depth by 72 meters, and it remains one of the largest reservoirs in western Austria. The lake is renowned for its crystal-clear turquoise waters and dramatic limestone surroundings, having been voted the most beautiful place in Austria by viewers of the TV show ‘9 Plätze – 9 Schätze’ in 2019. It serves as a popular hub for outdoor activities, offering hiking trails like the family-friendly circular route around the lake, as well as access to peaks like Schesaplana and via ferratas. The lake's depth was raised by 72 metres by the construction of a hydroelectric dam in 1958. The dam supplies water to four local power plants, Lünersee, Rodund I, Rodund II and Walgau. The lake is linked to the village of Brand by a cable car system, the Lünerseebahn. Lünersee Lake is highly accessible, as there’s an aerial cableway that connects Brandnertal (Brandner Valley) to the lake.
