What does an Oncology Data Specialist actually do? In this Cells2Cancer lesson, I explain cancer registry work through a fictional patient record. I cover casefinding, reportability, abstracting, quality checks, confidentiality, follow-up, and the connection to useful cancer data. Then I follow a fictional colon cancer record from its pathology report through a working abstract, a date correction, and later follow-up. You’ll see why checking the evidence and recognizing missing information are central parts of the job. I also explain NCRA’s terminology: cancer registrar describes the profession; ODS, ODS-C, and ODS-Certified are equivalent forms of its credential, formerly called CTR. I’m a student in the middle of my ODS-C journey, learning right along with you. If you spot something that needs correcting, please leave a comment with a source so I can check it and keep learning.
