The neighbourhood of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, on the Left Bank of the Seine, was famous for its underground clubs, artistic cafés and lively intellectual scene. Jazz musicians from the United States met French and European players, creating a musical conversation that crossed continents. American trumpeter and vocalist Chet Baker arrived in Europe in 1955, at a time when his cool, lyrical style had already made him one of the defining voices of West Coast jazz. His delicate trumpet phrasing, restrained improvisations and intimate singing offered a different kind of expression: less about dazzling virtuosity, more about melody, space and emotion. During his Paris stay, Baker recorded for the French label Barclay, including sessions in October 1955 with pianist Dick Twardzik.
