The Ruling on Reading the Quran Without Tajwid - Sheikh Sulaiman bin Salimullah Ar-Ruhaili

Many people hesitate to read the Qur'an because they feel they have not mastered all the rules of tajwid. In this short lecture, Sheikh Sulaiman bin Salimullah Ar-Ruhaili explains that the rulings of tajwid are actually divided into two types. First, the tajwid required for the validity of the recitation (istiqamah qira'ah) — this is obligatory to apply because it is part of the very reality of reading itself. Second, the tajwid required to beautify the recitation (tahsin tilawah) — this is a matter of perfection (sunnah); whoever applies it has done well, and whoever does not apply it, even while knowing it, commits no sin. As for a person who does not know a rule of tajwid at all, the Sheikh affirms that religious obligation (taklif) is a branch of knowledge — a person is not burdened with something he does not yet know. Therefore, it may not be said to him, "do not read the Qur'an until you learn tajwid," but rather, "read according to your ability." In fact, if a person reads the Qur'an with difficulty and stumbles because of his limitations, he receives two rewards: the reward for reading and the reward for his effort (mujahadah), as mentioned by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the following hadith: Hadith: عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ: "الْمَاهِرُ بِالْقُرْآنِ مَعَ السَّفَرَةِ الْكِرَامِ الْبَرَرَةِ، وَالَّذِي يَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ وَيَتَتَعْتَعُ فِيهِ وَهُوَ عَلَيْهِ شَاقٌّ، لَهُ أَجْرَانِ" Meaning: "The one who is skilled in the Qur'an will be with the noble and righteous recording angels (Safarah). And the one who reads the Qur'an while stumbling through it, finding it difficult, will have a double reward."
