The Eight Bhairavas
Asitanga, Ruru, Chanda, Krodha, Unmatta, Kapali, Bhishana and Samhara are known as the Eight Bhairavas.
1. Bhairava — The Guardian of the Sacred Realm
I bow to Bhairava, whose matted locks blaze with red fire,
whose form shines with radiant energy,
and whose head is adorned with the crescent moon.
He holds the trident, skull, noose and damaru,
and protects the entire world.
He is associated with liberation,
has a dog as His vehicle,
and possesses three eyes.
He is filled with divine bliss and ecstatic spiritual power.
I bow to Shiva Bhairava, Lord of spirits and beings,
the guardian of the sacred realm and protector of the holy field.
2. The Fierce Bhairava
I bow to Bhairava, who is:
liberated, beyond thought, stainless, pure and changeless.
His powerful roar is terrifying.
His teeth shine like thunderbolts,
His eyes blaze like sacred fire,
and His nature is fierce and formidable.
He holds the trident, sword, skull and damaru.
I bow to Bhairava, the Kshetrapala,
the divine guardian of the sacred realm.
3. The Auspicious and Powerful Bhairava
I meditate upon Bhairava, radiant and pure in form,
with multiple arms and five faces,
each adorned with three eyes.
He bears the trident, sword, arrows, bow, damaru and other divine weapons.
His hands bestow blessings and remove fear.
His radiant form is like silver, snow and immortal nectar.
May that Bhairava grant all spiritual accomplishments and protection from every fear.
4. The Radiant Bhairava
I constantly meditate upon Bhairava,
whose form resembles the rising Sun,
whose body is red and radiant,
whose eyes are three,
and whose form shines with intense spiritual energy.
He bears the skull and trident in His hands
and grants boons and fearlessness.
His throat is blue,
His body is adorned with magnificent ornaments,
and His brilliance illuminates the sacred realm.
May this divine Bhairava always remove fear and protect His devotees.
5. Kala Bhairava
I bow to Kala Bhairava, the destroyer of time and death.
He holds a khatvanga, serpent, noose, trident, skull and sword,
and carries the damaru and bow.
He is adorned with the Sun and Moon
and bears a banner decorated with celestial symbols.
He represents the power that transcends time itself.
I bow to that Kshetrapala,
who destroys fear and protects devotees from the power of death.
6. The Childlike Bhairava
I bow to the youthful Bhairava,
whose body shines like crystal,
whose beautiful face radiates divine joy,
and whose ornaments are adorned with precious jewels and serpent gems.
He wears divine anklets and ornaments.
His face is radiant and peaceful,
His form is beautiful and auspicious,
and He possesses two eyes.
He carries divine weapons and the skull
and grants fearlessness to those who seek His protection.
7. The Fierce Three-Eyed Bhairava
I meditate upon Bhairava with three eyes,
His body radiant and red,
adorned with every divine ornament.
He carries the skull and trident
and extends His hands in the gestures of blessing and protection.
He bears fierce weapons and a khatvanga.
His garments and garlands are red,
His body is beautifully adorned,
and His throat is blue.
He wears serpents as ornaments,
has a fierce appearance,
and is adorned with a garland of heads.
The sound of His anklets resounds as He moves.
His serpent sacred thread and tinkling ornaments enhance His terrifying yet divine form.
I bow to this powerful and fearsome Bhairava.
8. Samhara Bhairava
I meditate upon Samhara Bhairava,
with one face and three eyes
and twelve powerful arms.
