Join me as we walk through Castle Combe (in the Cotswolds) and discover whether it really is the prettiest village in England. As I started our four-day tour of Cotswold villages, Castle Combe was at the top of our list. I wanted to discover whether it lived up to the hype. What do you think? Let us know in the comments. The village's origins can be traced back to the Roman era, but it gained prominence in the Middle Ages due to the flourishing wool industry, which brought wealth and development. At the heart of Castle Combe is the market square, which features the iconic market cross, a reminder of the village's past as a bustling market town. Adjacent to the square is St. Andrew's Church, a structure dating back to the 13th century. It is known for its impressive clock face and beautifully preserved medieval interior. What sets Castle Combe apart is its commitment to preserving its historical integrity and natural beauty. Modern developments are carefully controlled, ensuring that any additions are in keeping with the village's architectural heritage. This careful preservation allows visitors to experience an authentic slice of medieval England, as the village remains remarkably unchanged from its days as a prosperous wool trading center. Castle Combe's picturesque scenery has made it a favoured location for filmmakers. It has served as a backdrop for numerous movies and television series seeking to capture the essence of historic England.
