A pilot reports a broken windshield, severe problems inside the aircraft, and then something even more alarming: he says he is bleeding profusely. Air traffic control tries to guide him toward a safe landing, but the situation becomes increasingly difficult to understand. On January 11, 2009, a Piper PA-46-500TP Meridian, registration N428DC, was flying from Anderson, Indiana, toward Destin, Florida. During the flight, the pilot reported severe turbulence, claimed the aircraft's door had come off, and said the controls were locked. He also reported that he was beginning to gray out. Controllers searched for a nearby airport and continued trying to help. But eventually, the pilot stopped responding. Military fighter aircraft were dispatched to intercept the plane. What they found raised even more questions: the aircraft was flying with its door open and its lights off. The Meridian continued south before eventually crashing into wooded terrain near Milton, Florida. But when investigators examined the wreckage, they discovered something extraordinary. The pilot was gone. The NTSB found no evidence of a pre-impact mechanical failure. Investigators concluded that the pilot had intentionally abandoned the aircraft in flight and later determined that he had parachuted out. In this video, we follow the real air traffic control audio, reconstruct the events as they unfolded, and examine how a distress call turned into one of aviation's most puzzling incidents. 🎧 Listen to the radio communications and follow the timeline of the incident.
