March 1986. Northeast Nebraska, twenty miles outside Norfolk. Lloyd Brandt died in his machine shed in November with a wrench still in his hand. By March, the bank had brought the auction to his widow's front lawn — and a land buyer from Omaha opened the bidding low enough to bury her.
More than a hundred neighbors stood in the yard and refused to raise a hand. Then a man at the very back, in a brown parka and a feed store cap, outbid everyone, paid on the spot, and told the auctioneer whose name to write on the deed. It wasn't his.
It took the crowd ten minutes to recognize him. And the reason Johnny Carson was standing in a frozen Nebraska farmyard went back forty-six years — to a blizzard, a borrowed farm truck, and an I.O.U. a fourteen-year-old magician wrote on the back of a handbill.
This video is a dramatized retelling inspired by the lives and careers of Johnny Carson. Dialogue and certain events have been recreated for storytelling purposes.
