Lift Your Cloak

“Lift Your Cloak” is the oldest of my songs. Its words began in 2005, while I was in Cape Town completing my TEFL course and preparing for the next chapter of my life—a move to China. Every day, I would drive past Table Mountain. Most days, clouds concealed its summit. Day by day, the words formed in my mind: a plea to this magnificent presence to lift its cloak and let me see its face. The mountain inspired the words, but I’ve always wanted their meaning to remain open. Perhaps you’ll hear a longing for connection, an unanswered prayer, or the yearning to glimpse something beautiful that remains just beyond reach. More than twenty years later, those words have found their music: dramatic Spanish guitar, cello, and a voice calling through the clouds. “Open your ears And hear my song. Open your heart And feel my longing.” Original words by Gert Marx, with AI assistance in adapting them into song. Music and vocals generated using Suno. Lyric video created with AI assistance.
