The first three people judged on the Day of Resurrection all did great deeds: a man who fought until he was killed, a man who learned, taught and recited the Quran, and a man who spent his money in every good cause. Each one says: "for You". Each one hears: "You lied."
The whole hadith from Sahih Muslim 1905, the one hidden problem behind it (riya, showing off), and the Prophet's answer, peace be upon him, when he was asked about a man who does a good deed and people praise him for it.
Every verse and hadith is listed below with its reference.

Saying of the early scholar al-Fudayl ibn 'Iyad (not a hadith), quoted by al-Nawawi in al-Adhkar and al-Tibyan: leaving a deed because of people is showing off; doing a deed for people is shirk; sincerity is that Allah frees you from both
Sahih Muslim 2642 (narrated by Abu Dharr): the Prophet was asked about a man who does a good deed and people praise him for it: "That is the early good news of the believer"
Sahih al-Bukhari 1423 and Sahih Muslim 1031: a man who gave charity so secretly that his left hand did not know what his right hand gave (Bukhari's wording; Muslim's narration has the hands the other way round)
