Before automatic air brakes became common, stopping an American freight train could mean sending men across the roofs of moving cars. They were called brakemen—and the train they had to slow down was also the floor beneath their feet.
This episode follows the hand brake wheels, narrow roof walks, low bridges and dangerous couplings that shaped their working lives. Then came George Westinghouse’s air brake: an invention that changed how a train could be controlled, but did not make every dangerous job disappear overnight.
A photograph from 1943 reveals why the story is more complicated than “air brakes brought everyone down from the roofs.”
Everyday America explores the machines, working lives and everyday systems that changed the United States.
Which old railroad job should we explore next?
