Most travelers in Kyoto head straight for Fushimi Inari or Kiyomizu-dera.
But just one hour from the city, there's a quiet mountain temple almost no one outside Japan has heard of.
Kurama-dera (founded 770 AD) is known in Japan as:
🌿 The birthplace of Reiki — the healing art was received here by Mikao Usui in 1922
⚔️ A samurai training ground — young Yoshitsune is said to have learned swordsmanship from the tengu
🐯 A rare temple guarded by tigers instead of the usual lion-dogs
✨ Home of a hexagram "power spot" said to be one of Japan's strongest
