I just finished an 11 km Zone 2 run, breathing entirely through my nose—and instead of feeling satisfied, I felt frustrated. I had just listened to a podcast with Patrick McKeown and James Nestor talking about nose breathing, and it got me thinking about how long it has taken for this conversation to reach runners and the broader fitness community. It is applicable to more than fitness. If you breathe, it is applicable.
Three years ago, when I first started experimenting with nose breathing, I couldn’t even run 100 metres breathing in and out through my nose. I couldn’t manage two full cycles of breathing without switching back to my mouth. Today, nose breathing while running feels natural.
In this video, I share a little of my reaction to that podcast, but more importantly, I talk about my own three-year journey with nose breathing, what I noticed when I first started, and some of the changes I’ve experienced along the way—including one surprising change with the heavy-leg feeling I used to experience when running.
I’m not suggesting nose breathing is a magic solution or that everyone should suddenly start running with their mouth closed. I’m sharing my experience and why I think this is a conversation worth having.
And if you’re curious about where this journey started for me, my very first YouTube video was actually about nose breathing. I’ll link it below.
Have you experimented with nose breathing while running? I’d love to hear about your experience.
