America Almost Lost These Bison Forever

On November 5th, Meet My Neighbor Productions heads southwest to Caprock Canyons State Park in Texas to continue filming NATIVE | The Prodigies of an Icon — and to meet a herd with an extraordinary connection to the survival of the American bison. At the end of the 1800s, the great herds of Plains bison had been reduced from millions of animals to only a scattered few. But not all were lost. Texas rancher Charles Goodnight and his wife Mary Ann Goodnight helped preserve a small group of Southern Plains bison on the JA Ranch. Descendants of that herd survive today as the Texas State Bison Herd at Caprock Canyons. In this behind-the-scenes travel vlog, our crew travels into the rugged canyon country of the Texas Panhandle to film these animals and explore one of the remarkable survival stories behind the return of the American bison. The red cliffs and open grasslands of Caprock Canyons provide an incredible backdrop, but what makes this place special isn't simply the scenery. These bison represent a living connection to the animals that survived one of the most dramatic wildlife declines in North American history. Throughout our journey filming NATIVE, we've followed bison through national parks, tribal lands, private ranches and conservation herds across North America.
