Put a Hair Dryer on Your Hotel Bed and Watch What Happens (9 Things Hotel Housekeepers Check First)

When I check in as a guest, my suitcase stands on the bathroom tile until I have done 9 things. It takes 4 minutes. The toilet is not one of them, and the reason is at the end. THE 9 CHECKS 1. The luggage rack. Flashlight along the straps and seams before the suitcase goes on. 2. The alarm clock. The last guest's 5 o'clock alarm is still set. 3. The remote and the lamp switch. A 2012 University of Houston study found them among the dirtiest surfaces in the room, with the toilet. 70% alcohol on a cloth, or put the remote in the shower cap. 4. The glasses. Hold one to the window. A ring at the rim means it was rinsed in the bathroom sink. 5. The ice bucket. No liner, no ice in your glass. 6. The kettle. Look inside with a light. Boil once, pour it away, then boil fresh. 7. The bed runner and decorative pillows. Fold them into the wardrobe. 8. The sheets. A fresh sheet shows pressed fold lines. No lines, a hair or a smell, call the desk. 9. The mattress seam. Pull back the fitted sheet at the head corner. Dark rust dots like felt-pen marks, pale skins, or an apple-seed sized bug: do not unpack, and ask to move, not next door. WHEN YOU GET HOME · Unpack straight into the washing machine, then the dryer on high heat. The dryer is what kills bed bugs. Washing alone mostly does not. · The suitcase goes in the garage or a closet, never under your bed. Do one thing next trip: the suitcase stays on the bathroom tile until you have looked under that corner of the sheet. Then tell me in the comments the worst thing you have ever found in a hotel room.
