Milan Cathedral took almost six centuries to finish. Work began in 1386, and the last details were only completed in the 1960s. It's covered with more statues than almost any building in the world, about 3,400, and a gilded statue of the Virgin Mary called the Madonnina watches over the city from its tallest spire. For years, no Milan building was allowed to stand taller than her. Next door, the Galleria opened in 1867 as one of the world's first covered shopping arcades.
