Alberobello is famous for its trulli, round limestone houses topped with cone roofs built without any mortar. A local legend says they were built dry so they could be taken apart quickly when the tax collectors came, since a house that could disappear couldn't be taxed. The Rione Monti district alone has about 1,000 of them, and many roofs are painted with old white symbols whose meanings are still debated.
