MICHIGAN 1979 Cold Case Solved After 27 Years — A College Class Cracked It
-----
ust after two o'clock in the morning on January 31, 1979, a man called police in Holland, Michigan, to report a robbery at the Blue Mill Inn. About five hundred dollars was missing. So was the night clerk, 22-year-old Hope College music student Janet Chandler. Her jacket was still on her chair. Her cigarette was still burning in the ashtray.
A day later, a snowplow driver found her beside Interstate 196, thirty-five miles away. That winter the motel was full of out-of-town security guards brought in for a bitter strike, and many people knew something. For twenty-seven years, not one of them said a word.
The silence broke because of a class project. In 2003, Hope College professor David Schock and his documentary students made a film about the forgotten case. Within months, the Michigan State Police and Holland police formed a cold case team, carried out more than 300 interviews in 18 states, and listened again to that 1979 robbery call. One detective said it sounded staged.
This documentary covers the full story: Janet's life and the winter of the Chemetron strike, the night she disappeared, the first investigation and the wall of silence, the student film that reopened the case, the detective known as "The Closer", the confession, the six people charged, the 2007 trial in Grand Haven, the sentencing, the appeals, and what twenty-seven years of silence cost a family.
Every case on this channel went cold, and every one of them ended with a name. 🔔 Subscribe to Crime Watch Investigations for a new solved cold case every week.
