Across the desert around California’s Salton Basin are hundreds of stone features that make little sense until the ancient shoreline is put back. Cahuilla traditions remembered fishing beside a vast freshwater lake. Archaeology found settlements and stone fish traps along the old shore — and modern radiocarbon work has now redrawn the chronology of Lake Cahuilla itself, showing repeated high stands much later than older reconstructions assumed. The result is not a simple story of an ancient legend “proved” by science. It is a case where oral memory, archaeology and a changing scientific timeline keep forcing the same landscape to be read again. Sources: 1.
