In 1836, Constantine Samuel Rafinesque published what he claimed was an ancient Lenape historical record preserved on painted wooden tablets. The Walam Olum appeared to describe origins, migrations, wars, and deep precolonial history. But the original tablets disappeared. The supposed intermediary could not be securely traced. And when researchers later examined Rafinesque’s surviving manuscript, the direction of composition appeared to run backward: Lenape wording was being changed to fit English meaning. This episode follows the provenance, the missing originals, the scholars who defended the text for more than a century, and David Oestreicher’s forensic reconstruction of how the document was likely created. The Walam Olum is not a story about fake Lenape history. It is a story about how a manufactured source acquired academic authority. Sources: 1. Constantine S.
