This video showcases Victorian Goldfields Railway's resident steam locomotive J549 as it travels along the 17 kilometre route from Castlemaine to Maldon.
VR J549 is an oil fired, superheated 2-8-0, built in the UK for the Victorian Railways in 1954. It weighs in at around 68 tons and has 55 inch driving wheels, making it an ideal locomotive for branch line use.
We follow J549 in this video from both the lineside and on the footplate, as it handles the many gradients of up to 1 in 40 and passes through various spots along the line on it's way to Maldon.
All footage in this video was shot in 2026 over a couple days, including both day and night operations. The railway runs regular daytime excursion trips as well as occasional special night time trains, offering variety to it's patrons.
Many thanks to all the kind and welcoming volunteers and train crew at the railway who made our visit thoroughly enjoyable.
