The Panoz LMP-1 Roadster S is an unconventional open-top Le Mans Prototype that debuted in 1999 to compete in top-tier sports car racing. Unlike its contemporary mid-engined rivals, designer Andy Thorby utilized a front-mid engine layout, placing the powerplant ahead of the cockpit and positioning the driver far back, nearly over the rear axle. The vehicle is constructed around a carbon-fiber and aluminum honeycomb monocoque chassis and maintains a total dry weight of approximately 900 kilograms. It is powered by an Elan-developed 6.0-liter naturally aspirated Ford V8 engine producing roughly 630 horsepower and 670 Nm of torque, which transfers power to the rear wheels through a 6-speed sequential manual transmission In terms of racing history, the car proved immediately competitive against established machinery by securing the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) teams' championship during its inaugural 1999 season, notably defeating the BMW factory team. Throughout its active career spanning from 1999 until 2003, the prototype achieved eight victories and five pole positions in international events, including a memorable overall win at the 1,000 km of Nürburgring in 2000 . At the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the front-engined chassis challenged mid-engined giants like Audi and BMW, achieving its most notable La Sarthe result with a 5th-place overall finish in 2000, followed by a 7th-place overall classification in 2001 The specific chassis captured in this video was recorded during the 2026 edition of the Imola Classic at the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari. Competing in the Endurance Racing Legends (ERL1) grid, the car was piloted by driver Olivier Galant. Over the course of the race weekend, which served as the season finale for the Le Mans Classic Series, Galant achieved a successful performance by securing a double victory in the category Enjoy the video!
