Practical Magic (1998) is a cozy witch movie about sisterhood. It is also a poisoning, a cross-country drive with a body in the trunk, and a man who gets killed twice. We are three real attorneys from New Jersey, and two weeks after the sequel hit theaters we finally put the Owens sisters on trial. From Gillian microdosing Jimmy with belladonna, to whether spiking the tequila of a man holding you at gunpoint counts as self-defense when he is not actively attacking you (we did not agree), to a 40 hour drive from Arizona to Massachusetts with him in the trunk. Then the resurrection spell raises a question we never expected to answer: if a man gets back up, was he ever legally dead? That one answer decides whether Sally is looking at manslaughter, abuse of a corpse, or nothing at all. We also go after Officer Gary Hallet, who searches the house with no warrant and no jurisdiction and then kisses his prime suspect, and the aunts' love potion side business, which is either consent by deception or consumer fraud depending on whether it actually works.
