[chapters below] You realise just how novel it was for a family to fly on an aeroplane from NZ to the US in 1978 when your grandparents, uncles, aunties, and cousins see you off at the airport (as seen here at 0:11). They also gathered again in Hamilton when we came back! "Hear ye, Hear ye! Thou hast returned from far away lands on a flying machine! Hark as we regale you with tales of foreigners who drive on the right and roll their rrrr's!" (link to that gathering below). I'll never stop being fascinated by that. Filmed by Trevor Wilson (Dad) who, at the time, was the President of The Full Gospel Businessmen's Fellowship International (Hamilton, NZ) and we flew all that way to attend the FGBMFI conferences at the Anaheim Convention Centre in L.A. and the Sheraton Hotel in Waikiki, Hawaii (Silver Anniversary). He could've gone by himself but decided to take the family to Disneyland as well. What a guy. My favourite TV show then was The New Mickey Mouse Club, so imagine meeting the mouse for real! Thanks Dad. Huge memories for the rest of our lives. That Woolworths waitress at 41:59 was right: we were lucky kids. Thanks also, Dad for having the foresight to capture this on film (another novelty for the time). Of all the movies uploaded on this channel, this is the one we wanted to watch as kids. I'm guessing he bought the camera in time for this trip (there's no film before 1978) and then bought a microphone in Hawaii, as the audio kicks in at 38:25 July, 1978 - Ross was 8, Jan 6, and Brett 4 (parents, 31). At some point, a jet-lagged Ross thought it was a good idea to announce, "I'm not having a very good time", a phrase we still say to this day. The fight with Jan in the backseat of the Camaro outside Pat Boone's house in Beverly Hills is also memorable. Dad: "You'll probably never come here ever again so sit still and look out the window!" Fair enough. Boone = Bieber for Baby Boomers. 0:00 Auckland Airport to L.A. 0:58 Change planes in Hawaii 1:38 Flight attendant Jayne Calkin (husband = Terry Calkin) IYKYK 2:01 Cockpit 2:47 LAX 3:35 Night view of Anaheim from "Inn at the Park" 4:07 Fireworks 5:19 Day view of Anaheim from "Inn at the Park" 5:34 Disneyland 11:32 LA including the Hyatt Regency (now Fairmont) Century Plaza 11:59 Beach and our rented Chevrolet Camaro 12:16 Beverly Hills including Pat Boone's house, I think 13:00 The Queen Mary 13:14 Anaheim Convention Centre 14:20 Demos Shakarian (founder of the FGBMFI) 14:36 Knotts Berry Farm 18:32 flying to San Fransisco 19:03 San Fransisco 19:51 Chinatown with Ross and Mitch Bolt, son of friend Ben Bolt seen walking with Mum 21:00 Ben's house 22:04 Golden Gate Bridge 23:12 Ben drove us to Bakersfield Airport to fly back to L.A. 24:10 Universal Studios 27:16 Walk of Fame & Mann's Chinese Theatre (as it was known then) 27:42 Jimmy Swaggart on TV (parents were big fans) 28:00 Demos Shakarian (founder of the FGBMFI) 28:12 Anaheim Convention Centre 28:40 LAX to Hawaii 31:38 Oceania Floating Restaurant 32:29 Waikiki Beach 34:38 Blowhole 35:06 Somewhere on the North Shore (Ross & Mum struggling in the surf) 37:10 Trip to Pearl Harbour 38:06 Night view from what was then known as The Outrigger Waikiki Surf Hotel 38:25 [audio] Donuts in the hotel - main streets of Waikiki 39:36 Waikiki Beach 41:14 Woolworths Restaurant - apparently I had developed half an American accent from a friend I had met at the conference; Leo from New York (hope he's doing well) 43:02 Hawaii to NZ 44:17 Home at 52 Boundary Road, Hamilton NZ 45:54 Post-holiday interviews with kids and Jackie the cat (RIP) Gathering at Dave & Connie Linch's upon our return -    • 1978 at Dave & Connie Linch's
