NASA’S LATEST BLACK HOLE DISCOVERY JUST CHANGED WHAT WE KNOW — and the evidence from the James Webb Space Telescope could force scientists to rethink how the universe’s largest black holes were born.
For decades, astronomers have debated a fundamental question: did galaxies form first, or did their central supermassive black holes come first? Webb has now provided striking evidence for a scenario in which at least some enormous black holes formed with massive seeds rather than growing gradually from ordinary stellar remnants. In one distant Little Red Dot, researchers directly measured a black hole with a mass of roughly 50 million Suns, accounting for at least two-thirds of the system’s total mass.
Webb has also found strong evidence for another extraordinary possibility: so-called black hole stars, rapidly growing black holes surrounded by extremely dense gas cocoons. These observations are helping scientists investigate how the first supermassive black holes could have grown so rapidly in the early universe.
