With: Brett KenCairn, Senior Policy Advisor for Climate and Resilience, City of Boulder Most climate strategies focus on one cause: burning fossil fuels. Brett KenCairn makes the case for the other half of the story, which scientists named as early as 1971: the degradation of the living world and the disruption of the carbon and water cycles. For mountain towns at the top of the watershed, he argues, the deeper issue is water. KenCairn points to past recoveries, from Dust Bowl soil work to China's Loess Plateau, then brings it home to Boulder. He walks through Cool Boulder, a coalition of more than 60 community organizations focused on connected canopies, pollinator habitat and absorbent landscapes. The city also uses paid community stewards, parcel-level canopy mapping, beehives that monitor biodiversity, and satellite analysis of 500 square miles at risk of drying out. He also shares reports from Kansas and Oklahoma of regenerative farming areas getting one to two inches more moisture than surrounding land. This is a main stage session from the Mountain Towns 2030 Climate Summit in Sun Valley, Idaho, October 13-14, 2026. Learn more about Mountain Towns 2030: https://www.mt2030.org
