Ice Should NOT Float (It's not what you think) | Feynman Physics Solid iron sinks in molten iron. Solid lead sinks in liquid lead. Mercury, copper, nitrogen, they all sink in their own liquid, because cold packs matter tighter. That's the rule. Then water arrives at the same fork, does the opposite, and you've never once found that suspicious. It's not the air bubbles. Clear, degassed laboratory ice floats exactly as well as the cloudy cubes from your freezer. And "ice is less dense" isn't an explanation. That's the question wearing a lab coat.
