Today on The Brew: Craft Beer Reviews, my father Tomas and I are getting together to sample, rate, and review a unique international spirit! Raki Rushi Y Kosovës is a raki (also known as rakija), a fruit brandy that is exceptionally popular in the Balkan countries of southeastern Europe. In countries like Albania, Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro, many people produce it in their homes, and it’s a popular thing to drink throughout the day, even at breakfast with coffee! Raki Rushi Y Kosovës contains a whopping 49% alcohol by volume and is produced by Stone Castle Vineyards and Winery in Rahovec, Kosovo. I had the pleasure of visiting their facility during my trip to Kosovo in October of 2020. In addition to producing raki, they’re also known for producing the finest wine in Kosovo, and have done so since 1953! Raki is most commonly made using grapes, but can be made using everything from berries to quince to plums to apricots. Its flavor can also vary widely, from fruity to herbal to peppery. The smoothness can vary based on the number of times it has been distilled and the amount of sugar in the raki.
