Lord, how do we set the table this year when one of the chairs will be empty? As Thanksgiving and Christmas draw near, many of us carry two feelings at once. We are grateful for the years of full tables, laughter, and dishes piled high, and we dread the empty place, the tension, or the quiet if no one calls. This morning prayer for family is for every heart bringing its holiday memories, hopes, and fears to Jesus. We begin by thanking God for every Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, and birthday He has already given us, and for the people who sat at our tables, whether they are still with us or already with Him. We open a bottom drawer with a widow and unfold a white tablecloth. For forty years, every Thanksgiving guest signed it, and she embroidered over each name, including her late husband's. This year she wonders whether to spread it out at all. Empty chairs remind us how full our lives have been. We remember Jesus, who loved to sit at tables, ate with sinners, fed thousands on a hillside, and gathered His friends for one last supper. Then we pray for comfort for the empty chair, peace at the family table, and fresh joy for this holiday season. We hear Nehemiah tell a weeping people to celebrate and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared, "for the joy of the LORD is your strength." Pray along with the refrain, "You were at every table, Lord, and You will be at this one too," and invite Jesus to be the guest of honor at every meal this year.
Type "Lord, be at my table this year" in the comments, and if you'd like, share one favorite holiday memory with us. Please share this prayer with someone who is dreading the holidays, perhaps a widow facing her first Thanksgiving alone or a friend whose family is divided this year.
🙏 In This Prayer:
• Thanksgiving for every holiday memory God has given you
• Remembering with gratitude, not only grief
• The tablecloth of signatures: why empty chairs remind us how full our lives have been
• Jesus, who loved to sit at tables and understands the holiness of a shared meal
• Thanks for the protection we never saw on all those holiday trips
• Comfort for the empty chair and the first holidays after a loss
• The blessing Jesus promised to those who mourn
• Planning ahead for the hard days instead of letting them sneak up on you
• Peace for divided families, tense conversations, and old wounds
• Freedom to keep the traditions that bring joy and release the ones that have become burdens
• Joy for this holiday season: new memories, new traditions, new faces at the table
• Reaching out to someone who may spend the holidays alone
• Prayer for military families with someone missing from the table
• Hope of the great feast to come, where we will sit with our loved ones again
