Take one clean towel from your closet, wet it, squeeze it, hold it to your face and count to ten. If it smells like a sour dishrag, it only smelled clean while it was dry. My friend Carol, sixty-seven, washed her towels every week with hot water, extra soap and softener. She bought new towels twice and still smelled like a sour mop after every shower. I'm Ruth. I keep an Amish home in Holmes County, Ohio, and as a young bride I made the very same mistakes. Here is why towels go sour, the six wash day habits that stop it, and the old clothesline test my mother taught me. In this video: • Why a towel smells fine dry and sour the moment it gets wet (the tiny tenant called Moraxella) • The two problems: something feeds them, something lets them survive the wash • Safety first: one product at a time, never bleach with vinegar or ammonia • 1. Fabric softener and dryer sheets: why towels should drink, not shine • 2. Too much soap, especially in a front loader • 3. The damp hamper and the load forgotten in the washer • 4. Hot water and washing soda • 5. The once-only reset for towels that are already sour (and where vinegar does NOT belong) • 6. Dry them fast, all the way through the hem • My mother's kettle, the towel snap and the noon face test • When to let a towel go, what it costs, and an easier way for backs and knees HOMEWORK: Tonight, go to your hamper. If there's a wet towel in there, hang it spread over the shower rod. On your next towel wash, use half the soap and no softener, and do the face test when it's dry. Which one was yours: the softener, the extra soap, or the damp hamper? And how old is the oldest towel in your closet? Tell me in the comments. I read every one. Never put vinegar in the oxygen bleach soak, and never put chlorine bleach with vinegar or ammonia. Washing soda is a strong alkali: wear rubber gloves, keep it away from your eyes, and test colored towels for colorfastness first. If your washer manual says no vinegar, don't use it in the machine. Never mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia or other cleaners; always follow your appliance and product labels. #amishcleaning #laundrytips #smellytowels
