Prisms Within — J. Kristian O’Daugherty Prisms Within is a song about discovering that the parts of ourselves we once considered broken may be the very places where the light gets through. For much of my life, I looked outside myself for validation, love, belonging, and sometimes even for someone else to tell me who I was. I carried the belief that if the right person stayed, loved me enough, or somehow understood all the pieces, perhaps I would finally feel whole. But healing has taught me something very different. The fractures remain. The scars remain. The history remains. What changes is how I see them. A prism does not create light. It receives light and reveals everything that was already hidden inside it. One beam enters, and suddenly there are colors you could not see before. That became the heart of this song. The broken places are not something I need to erase. They are part of the person I became. Every scar marks somewhere I bent, hurt, survived, learned, or eventually found my way back from. And when I finally stopped trying to hide those places, I began to see something beautiful passing through them. Prisms Within is about learning that I do not need another person to complete me, define me, or carry my flame. I can hold my own fire. I can speak my own name. I can stand in the light without apologizing for the shadows that came before it. Musically, I wanted the song to carry the mysterious, windswept atmosphere of classic 1970s soft rock — something intimate, slightly haunted, spiritual, and ultimately empowering. The arrangement begins almost like a private thought and gradually grows into the realization that the magic I spent years searching for somewhere else had been inside me all along. The central idea is simple: I thought the cracks meant I was broken. Now I understand they were places where the light could get through. This is not a song about becoming untouched. It is about becoming unashamed. Not perfect. Not unscarred. Not who I was before. Just finally able to look at every color inside myself and say: It all belongs to me.
