In 2022 the M8s replaced diesel locomotive/passenger car trainsets in push-pull with the rear car being a cab car. This happened once Amtrak had electrified the Northeast Corridor tracks from New Haven, CT to Boston.
The Shore Line East service began in 1990 to relieve pressure on commuters due to road work on I-95. It proved more popular than expected and continued after the construction project was completed. Passengers can transfer to Metro-North New Haven Line trains to access stops between New Haven and New York City. In New London passengers can transfer to Northeast Regional and Acela trains going north to Boston, MA.
The Kawasaki M8 trainsets are owned jointly by the Connecticut DOT and the (New York) Metropolitan Transportation Authority's Metro-North Railroad. This is why you see both logos on the equipment.
While being categorized as a Commuter Rail service, the Shore Line East runs trains in both directions all day 7 days per week.
