UPI Transactions Fall in September as NPCI data shows UPI processed 24.07 billion transactions worth ₹29.37 lakh crore in September 2026, down 1.8% in volume and 1.5% in value from August. However, the average daily transaction count actually increased because September had one fewer day than August. The data comes ahead of the new UPI Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) framework scheduled from October 15. Under the government’s framework, a 0.4% MDR applies to specified merchant UPI transactions above ₹2,000, while person-to-person payments and UPI merchant payments up to ₹2,000 remain free; about 96% of merchant transactions are expected to remain unaffected.
