In this video, we introduce Lagrangian mechanics and show how the Euler-Lagrange equation can be used to solve complex mechanical systems. Starting from the Newton's second law, we introduce kinetic and potential energy, the Lagrangian, and the Action, and then use them to derive equations of motion. We apply the Euler-Lagrange equation to a spring oscillator, introduce generalized coordinates using a pendulum, and finish by explaining the small-angle approximation. Topics covered: • Kinetic and potential energy • The Lagrangian • The Euler-Lagrange equation • Generalized coordinates • Spring oscillator • Pendulum • Small-angle approximation This video is intended for students of physics, engineering, mathematics, and anyone interested in understanding Lagrangian mechanics.
