In World Sailing case 9, two boats on opposite tacks approach a windward mark. The starboard boat holds course and sails past the mark to force the port boat to tack. Can the port boat disregard Rule 10, because the starboard boat is sailing beyond their proper course? Note: this video was recorded against the 2021-2024 rules, and the title says so on purpose. The situation and the answer are unchanged under the 2025-2028 rules: rule 10 applies, and no rule requires a boat to sail a proper course. But rule 18.1 was restructured. The four exceptions the video lists as rules 18.1(a), (b), (c) and (d) are now rules 18.1(a)(1) to (4), and the two that apply here are 18.1(a)(1) and 18.1(a)(2). Take care with 18.1(b): it still exists in the current rulebook, but it now says rule 18 no longer applies once mark-room has been given. Rules 18.1(c) and 18.1(d) no longer exist. Check out the video on World Sailing case 75, which happened at a leeward mark:    • How much room can a right-of-way boat take...   Subscribe for more videos on the racing rules of sailing:    / @racingrulesgeek   Sources: The Racing Rules of Sailing for 2025-2028 https://www.sailing.org/inside-world-...
