All Roads Lead to Rome
Hear the footsteps on the stone,
Miles away from ancient Rome.
Through the valleys, over hills,
An old road is calling still.
First they measured out the land,
Lines were drawn by Roman hands.
Dig the earth and clear the way,
Lay the foundations day by day.
Stone and gravel, layer on layer,
Packed together with great care.
Ditches running either side,
Keeping roads firm, strong and dry.
Hammer falls and wheels begin,
Another journey can begin.
Over mountains, rivers, plains,
The road runs on through sun and rain.
All roads lead to Rome tonight,
Under stars and morning light.
Hear the wheels upon the stone,
Carrying a world toward Rome.
Soldiers, merchants, travellers go,
Down the roads of long ago.
Mile by mile and stone by stone,
All roads lead us back to Rome.
On the Appian Way they came,
Via Appia was its name.
Legions marching side by side,
Merchants taking goods to trade.
Milestones told how far to go,
Bridges crossed the streams below.
Messages could travel fast,
Connecting cities vast and far.
Sandals beating out the time,
Wagon wheels along the line.
Every road and every span
Joined the empire land to land.
All roads lead to Rome tonight,
Under stars and morning light.
Hear the wheels upon the stone,
Carrying a world toward Rome.
Soldiers, merchants, travellers go,
Down the roads of long ago.
Mile by mile and stone by stone,
All roads lead us back to Rome.
Not every road was paved the same,
Yet Roman roads became a name
For routes that crossed a world so wide,
With towns and stations at their side.
Orders travelled, armies moved,
Trade connected distant roofs.
Across the empire, near and far,
Roads became its beating heart.
All roads lead to Rome tonight,
Through the darkness into light.
Hear the footsteps, hear them roll,
Ancient echoes on the road.
Through the mountains, through the rain,
Travellers come and go again.
Mile by mile and stone by stone,
Follow the road that leads to Rome.
Now the legions march no more,
Still the stones remember all.
Two thousand years beneath the sky,
The Roman road is passing by.
