On Wednesday 28 October 2026, at 8:53 a.m. by the transport minister's account, a Renfe AVE running from Madrid to Seville ran into the back of an Iryo train that was standing still on the same track near Urda, in Toledo province. At least 68 people were killed.
About 23 minutes earlier, a computer failure took the line's LZB safety system out of service along about 63 km. LZB is the system that stops a train automatically when the section ahead is occupied. According to the minister and the radio recordings published by Cadena SER, at 8:36 the control centre told the AVE to resume at "normal running", when the procedure called for running on sight at 40 km/h at most. The AVE travelled about 25 km on that order.
This documentary reconstructs those 23 minutes in white clay 3D, built from official statements, the published recordings and reporting by AP, ABC News and the Spanish press. The line, the trains and the derailment are approximate. Where accounts differ, we say so. No one is shown inside the trains at the moment of the collision.
Status as of Wednesday night, 28 October 2026: a judge in Orgaz has declared the case secret, sealed off 2 km of track and ordered the trains' black boxes seized. The Guardia Civil has questioned the control-centre operator. No one has been charged. The rail accident investigation commission (CIAF), Adif and Renfe are investigating.
