Some people read the ending before the story begins, and then spend the whole book waiting for it to arrive.
This is a song about love that was once soft: a stolen blanket, a sorry hummed in sleep, a small sun with a crooked grin tucked inside a coat pocket. But once you have glimpsed the final page, every sweet line starts to sound rehearsed, and every kind word is a coin you cannot spend today.
It is a late night with the film starting over, and a heart that is fine until its eyes jump ahead to the credits. It is the quiet realization that you shrank yourself by degrees and called it devotion. In the end, the grief is not for the person across from you, but for the portrait you painted of them, and for the girl who held the brush before the paint ran through.
Some nights you would still step into their arms just to breathe. Some nights you are glad you are free to leave. The song lives in the space between those two truths, where the tape keeps rewinding and nothing resolves.
If this story found you tonight, subscribe and follow Velourglow for more late night songs about the things we feel but rarely say out loud. Leave a comment and tell me which line stayed with you.
Rewind the tape, just a little more
Play me the part from before
You stole the blanket, then said sorry in your sleep
Hummed off key songs that I was glad to keep
Slipped a note inside my coat, a sun with a crooked grin
Small things, soft things, the way you let me in
Tonight the film starts over and I’m fine
Till my eyes jump to the credits, line by line
I read the last page first
Now every sweet line sounds rehearsed
Each kind word you slide my way
Is a coin I can’t spend today
And the truth behind my teeth
Is I’d step into your arms, just to breathe
I read your mood by the sound of your keys
Told my people I was busy till they quit
Trimmed my edges down by degrees
Called it devotion, and I wore the fit
Tonight the film starts over and I’m fine
Till my eyes jump to the credits, line by line
I read the last page first
Now every sweet line sounds rehearsed
Each kind word you slide my way
Is a coin I can’t spend today
And the truth behind my teeth
Is I’d step into your arms, just to breathe
It’s not you I’m grieving, it’s the portrait I drew
And the girl with the brush, before the paint ran through
I read the last page first
Now every sweet line sounds rehearsed
Each kind word you slide my way
Is a coin I can’t spend today
And the truth behind my teeth
Is some nights I’d step in your arms, just to breathe
And some nights...
I’m glad I’m free to leave
Rewind the tape, just a little more
Play me the part before...
