NASA's AD-1 really flew with a wing that rotated across its fuselage. Why build an airplane that looked so wrong—and what did the experiment actually prove?
The AD-1 completed 79 flights and reached 60 degrees of wing sweep. It demonstrated low-speed piloted flight with an oblique wing, but it did not test the proposed high-speed efficiency of a larger transport aircraft. This episode separates the result from the prediction.
