1480: Infanta Isabella lives now in Portugal with her future husband Alfonso, 5 years her junior, under the care of Beatriz of Portugal. There, she has a bitter encounter with her cousin Joanna, who has chosen not to live in the convent. Isabella writes to her mother about this. Angered, queen Isabella does everything in her power to ensure Joanna takes her vows and remains in a convent. Prince John of Portugal contemplates taking drastic measures but is forced by his father king Alfonso to respect Joanna's life.
