Hello and Welcome to Deaf Talks News! Independence day special video. Today we are learning about the story of Idli and Sambar. Two foods that every South Indian eats almost for breakfast. But Idly came from Indonesia between the 8th and 12th century. Indian traders and sailors who travelled to Indonesia discovered this steamed rice cake. They brought the idea back to India. Since Idly is very dry people want something to add and eat. Tamilnadu Thanjavur was ruled by Maratha kings during 1600. Shahuji Bhonsle was the king who loved to eat spicy dal. However catastrophe struck when during one particular season the dal ran out of supply. What would a king do when his favourite ingredient runs out? His cook had to find a substitute immediately. He tried tamarind which was abundantly available in Tamil Nadu. He added local South Indian vegetables drumstick, brinjal, and tomato. The result was something completely new. Different places have different food but match with locals and create new dishes.
