Today’s video features my second Bakerloo Line journey from the London trip, travelling from Elephant & Castle to Paddington aboard the iconic 1972 Stock. 🟤🚇
Following yesterday’s journey from Waterloo to Elephant & Castle, we’re now heading back in the opposite direction — except this time we’re staying onboard considerably longer! 😂 The train is working from Elephant & Castle to Stonebridge Park, while my journey takes me as far as Paddington.
We start at the Bakerloo Line’s southern terminus at Elephant & Castle before heading through the deep-level tunnels beneath Central London. Along the way we call at Lambeth North, Waterloo, Embankment, Charing Cross, Piccadilly Circus, Oxford Circus, Regent’s Park, Baker Street, Marylebone and Edgware Road before reaching Paddington.
The Bakerloo Line is one of the oldest parts of the London Underground, with its original central section opening in 1906. You can definitely feel that history at some of the stations. Compared with the enormous modern stations found on newer sections of the Underground, parts of the Bakerloo have narrow passages, smaller platforms, older tiling and that unmistakable old deep-level Tube atmosphere.
Then there’s the train itself — the 1972 Stock. These trains are more than half a century old and are currently the oldest trains carrying passengers on the London Underground. They’re basically rolling pieces of Tube history at this point. 😂🚇
They sound old, they look old and they certainly don’t hide their age. You get the distinctive older doors, motors, rattles and mechanical noises that give the Bakerloo Line loads of character. There was also graffiti on the train, so this particular 1972 Stock had acquired some unofficial artwork along the way as well. 😂🎨
This journey also passes several major connections with the National Rail network. At Elephant & Castle, you can interchange with National Rail services operated by Thameslink and Southeastern. Waterloo connects with the huge London Waterloo National Rail terminus, primarily served by South Western Railway. Charing Cross connects with London Charing Cross, one of Southeastern’s major London termini. Marylebone connects with London Marylebone, primarily used by Chiltern Railways. And finally Paddington connects with London Paddington, home to Great Western Railway services, the Elizabeth line and Heathrow Express. 🚆
Baker Street is another huge Underground interchange, while Oxford Circus and Piccadilly Circus put us right underneath some of the busiest parts of Central London.
After around 19 minutes of travelling, we arrive at Paddington, where I leave the train. At 19:47 in the video, the 1972 Stock closes its doors and continues north towards Stonebridge Park, while my Bakerloo journey comes to an end.
And considering I’d somehow managed previous London trips without riding the Bakerloo Line at all, doing Waterloo → Elephant & Castle followed by Elephant & Castle → Paddington has definitely made up for it. 😂🟤🚇
