It's January 1849 in Ohio. You're Sam, a 26-year-old farmhand with $300 in a tin and a newspaper that says there's gold in California. You only get to spend it once. Make your choices like a real forty-niner: the road west (2,000 miles of plains, a jungle river in Panama, or months at sea around Cape Horn), what goes in your bag, and how you'll actually earn on a crowded river. After each choice, see what most people really picked, with real prices written down by a man who was there. Spoiler: the best money in the diggings wasn't in the water. Plains, Panama, or Cape Horn: which road would you take? Tell me in the comments. Every episode drops you into a real moment in American history and asks one question: would you make it? Subscribe and ride along. Sam is a composite built from real diaries and records, not one real person. Camp prices and daily earnings come from E. Gould Buffum's 1850 eyewitness account; totals and earnings varied, and historians' estimates differ. #GoldRush #AmericanHistory #WouldYouMakeIt 00:00 Cold Open: One Stake, Three Roads 00:52 How the News Reached Ohio 01:42 Choice 1: Plains, Panama, or Cape Horn 03:55 Choice 2: What You Pack 05:40 Who Was Already in the Diggings 07:13 Choice 3: How You Earn 09:05 Verdict: Your Score and William Swain Sources: E.
