Welcome to Trieu Tam Tam!
Today, I head into the mountains to harvest fresh bamboo shoots growing deep in the soil along the hillsides. Unlike bamboo shoots that are easy to spot above the ground, these shoots are partially hidden underground, so I have to search carefully and dig around them before harvesting. Working on the hillside takes patience and effort, but finding each fresh bamboo shoot makes the hard work worthwhile.
Instead of carrying the bamboo shoots home with their thick outer layers, I peel each shoot immediately after harvesting it. I remove the tough husks and keep only the tender white bamboo shoot cores, placing them neatly into my bamboo basket. I repeat this process until my basket is completely full. Peeling the bamboo shoots directly in the forest helps reduce the weight and allows me to carry more fresh shoots down the mountain. After finishing the harvest, I bring the peeled bamboo shoots to the village market to sell.
The next day, I return to the forest to dig wild yams growing deep underground. Finding these wild tubers is not easy, and digging them out requires both patience and careful technique. I have to loosen the surrounding soil slowly to avoid cutting or damaging the yams with my digging tool. My goal is to keep each wild yam as intact as possible, making them more attractive to customers when I bring them to the village market to sell.
On another day, I notice that the star apples growing in my home garden are ready to harvest. Since some fruits are high up in the tree, I carefully climb the branches and gently feel each star apple to check whether it is ripe. I pick only the fruits that are ready to eat. Before taking them to the market, I enjoy a few freshly harvested star apples and find them wonderfully sweet and delicious.
From digging bamboo shoots on mountain hillsides and peeling them directly in the forest to harvesting wild yams and picking ripe star apples from my garden, this video captures traditional harvesting, mountain farming, village market life, hard work, and the simple rhythm of everyday rural life in Vietnam.
